Las Terrenas is located at the north of the Peninsula of Samana and is one of the top destinations in the world for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts.

When you are in Las Terrenas you will immediately notice the Mediterranean influence, from the side walk cafes where people like to start their day with a cappuccino to the numerous European restaurants that are ideal for enjoying a long lunch over a glass of wine before heading to the beach for a siesta. Things to do:

National park of los Haitises: As part of the largest estuary in the insular Caribbean, the 208 km2 Los Haitises National Park is a protected area in the northeast of the country, which offers the visitor a rich variety of natural wonders to explore, including: large expanses of mangrove, humid subtropical forest, sea grass beds, and pristine keys scattered along the length of the coast. The park is located at the western end of the bay on the south shore across from Sanchez, this park features mangrove swamps with giant mangrove trees forming a lush, green canopy above the watery trails that wind through the swamps. Taino caves where the islands first inhabitants lived are another popular attraction of the park.

Cayo Levantado: is a little island in Samana Bay. The Bounty Hunters came in search of Paradise, and found it on Cayo Levantado. This jewel of a tiny island lies just off the Samana Peninsula and is our destination for a day of pure escapism.  The sand is white and powdery, the turquoise waters are crystal clear and perfect for snorkeling or gentle swimming.

Salto de Limon (El Limon Waterfall): Of the many waterfalls on the Samana Peninsula, El Limon (shown opposite) is the most spectacular. Nestled deep in thick palm forest, it rises 900 feet above sea level, and cascades 150 feet into a deep pool of water. In fact, of all the waterfalls to visit in the entire country, El Limon may have the most alluring combination of beauty, size, prime surroundings, and relative ease of access, though it’s still something of an adventure to reach (making it all the more of a thrill when you do). Trails to the falls are lined with giant ferns and huge trees, with rivers and thatched huts adding to the tropical ambiance.

Whale watching: More than 12.000 humpback whales visit the Dominican waters, in particular the bay of Samana,  from mid-January through mid- March during which time you can observe the whales from one of the many authorized tours available from both Las Terrenas and Samana.
